If “The Call of the Wild” is London’s best known work, at least during his lifetime, “The Sea Wolf” (1904) is London’s most notable effort to write an American classic. This is unfortunate because the book provides a clear model about how treatment of each other makes us who we are. Today, when I sometimes recommend the book to middle school students, they have never heard of the book before and generally show little interest. ![]() When I was a kid growing up and being educated in South Dakota schools, “The Call of the Wild” was required reading. He nurses Buck back to life, but it was too late to be permanent. Ultimately he is rescued from that life by John Thornton. The protagonist is Buck, a sled-dog who reverts to savagery based upon the treatment of his owners and the violent savagery of other dogs. “The Call of the Wild” (1903) is London’s best-known work. ![]()
